Wyeth Launches Lybrel in the U.S July 30, 2007 Drug developer Wyeth said Monday its Wyeth Pharmaceuticals unit launched birth-control pill Lybrel in the United States, the first low-dose combination pill that women can take to prevent getting their period for up to a year. The pill is now available in U.S. pharmacies. The Food and Drug Administration approved Lybrel in May. The pill is taken year-round, without a placebo phase or pill-free interval. The company said most women in clinical studies experienced some breakthrough bleeding and spotting during the first three to six months of taking Lybrel. The contraceptive provides women with more hormonal exposure on a yearly basis _ 13 additional weeks of hormone intake per year _ than conventional cyclic oral contraceptives containing the same strength of synthetic estrogens and similar strength of progestins.
