FDA sanctions first low dose combination oral contraceptive pill, Lybrel

The much awaited oral contraceptive lybrel finally gets the Food and Drug Administration nod to offer complete relief to women who seek oral contraceptive for the deterrence of pregnancy and have no issues with the newly approved preparation. Wyeth Pharmaceuticals's innovation, lybrel is approved to be utilized as an oral contraceptive for the prevention of pregnancy in women. The drug is the only and first low dose combination contraceptive preparation which can be consumed the whole year, i.e., 365 days a year without any gap. A prescription formulation, lybrel is anticipated to hit U.S. pharmacies in July 2007.


The drug is primed for women who are set to put their menstrual cycle on hold and are on lookout for contraception. Lybrel proffers a constant low hormonal dose in order to make women completely menstrual cycle free over the period of time. However, it is essential for women to know that during the clinical trials some women experienced breakthrough bleeding and spotting specifically in the initial three to six months.
