Phendimetrazine

Phendimetrazine is the generic name to the brand drug Bontril. It is a sympathomimetic amine, similar to an amphetamine and is used as a short-term supplement to diet and exercise in the treatment of obesity.

Phendimetrazine is not a substitute for diet. It is also known as an "anorectic" or "anorexigenic" drug stimulates the central nervous system, which increases your heart rate and blood pressure and decreases your appetite.

How to use

  • Phendimetrazine should be taken only on consultation with a doctor to guard against possible side effects and probable drug interactions.
  • Phendimetrazine is usually taken once a day (sustained release formula) or two to three times daily (immediate-release formula) before meals on an empty stomach.
  • Diet Pills should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed contemplating side effects.
  • Phendimetrazine is mainly used in the short term treatment of obesity and should not be used for more than 8 to 12 weeks.
  • Moreover, it should only be administered as a prescription medication to assist with the battle of obesity and not for "cosmetic" weight loss.

Side Effects

The initial adjustment: As your body adjusts to the medication, you may initially experience side effects like  restlessness, anxiety, dizziness, headache, insomnia, diarrhea, dry mouth and changes in sex drive, allergic reactions (short of breath, closing of the throat, swelling of lips or tongue), hallucinations, difficulty in urinating, extreme hypertension, chest pain and throbbing heart.

What to avoid: Prolonged use of Phendimetrazine may lead to addiction and may even experience withdrawal symptoms once you stop taking it.

Consult a doctor: Consult your doctor if these effects persist or you experience insomnia, headache or dizziness, nervousness or anxiety, restlessness or tremor, dry mouth or an unpleasant taste in your mouth, diarrhea or constipation, breathing difficulties, restlessness, etc.

Drug interaction

  • Consult your doctor and inform about all the prescription and nonprescription drugs you use.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking anti depressants, hypertension or weight loss drugs as these drugs may deter the effects of Phendimetrazine.
  • Notify your doctor before taking Phendimetrazine if you are suffering from hypertension and is on drugs like guanethidine (Ismelin) as Phendimetrazine may reduce the effect of such drugs causing an elevation in blood pressure levels.
  • Do not take Phendimetrazine especially if you on monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) like furazolidone, linezolid, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine) even in the last 14 days.
  • Avoid "stimulant" drugs that may increase your heart rate such as decongestants or caffeine.
  • Use Phendimetrazine after judging all possibilities of drug interaction.

Precautions

  • Notify your doctor if you are suffering from alcohol or drug abuse before using Phendimetrazine.
  • Phendimetrazine should not be taken by pregnant woman since the drug may cause birth defects in an unborn baby.
  • Phendimetrazine should not also be used by lactating mothers. Though not clinically proved, there is possibility that this diet pill may be passed into breast milk. Therefore, consult your doctor for you may have to stop nursing or stop using this drug.
  • It is advisable to consult a doctor before taking Phendimetrazine if you are affected by conditions like epilepsy or seizure disorder, diabetes, anxiety disorder, thyroid problems etc.
  • Phendimetrazine should not be taken by women with heart disease or hypertension.

Dosage

  • Phendimetrazine is usually taken once a day (sustained release formula) or two to three times daily (immediate-release formula) before meals on an empty stomach.
  • One Phendimetrazine Slow-Release Capsule (105 mg) is taken in the morning, 30-60 minutes before the morning meal.
  • The dosage for the drug varies from person to person depending upon the body metabolism. Therefore, consult a doctor before taking the drug and administer as prescribed by your physician.
  • In any case, Phendimetrazine diet pills are strictly advised to be used only under medical supervision so as to prevent probable drug interaction and possible side-effects.

Overdose: Seek emergency medical attention immediately. Symptoms of Phendimetrazine overdose include restlessness, tremor, rapid breathing, confusion, hallucinations, convulsions, unconsciousness panic, drowsiness, aggressiveness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat and seizures.

Missed dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is too late or almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. A dose taken too late in the day will cause insomnia. Never take a double dose of this medication.

Storage
Phendimetrazine diet pill should be stored at room temperature in a cool and dry place. Keep away from the reach of children.
